Off To Boracay

Sometimes working in Makati, you forget how beautiful the tropical locals the Philippines has. Luckily! I am taking a couple of days to soak up some sun and chilling in Boracay. The place is beautiful and like walking inside of a postcard or a bad ass desktop wall paper.

Better get my sun screen. Toodles

Funguy Work Out Video

I have brought my shovel and voodoo magic to bring back to life the “jokes of using a shake weight”. They say it can’t be done, but I try to defy the odds!

The Interview

Recently I have had the opportunity to build a team and help hiring new spots in our studio. Usually involving going over portfolios and interviewing new candidates . Its been an interesting experience being on the opposite side of the table. This has been my first experience, so here are a couple of things I have noticed in my short time.

Best Foot Forward and Focused - If your an artist or a person with a lot of experience. Just show me the best most relevant stuff to the position. I don’t care about your photography class in high school or your pizza delivering position you had.  The Philippines is a big offender because of the mentality of throwing everything into your portfolio even your kitchen sink.

Short and Sweet- Don’t judge how an interview goes depending on the length of time it took up. My best hire came in and I knew in 10 minutes he was perfect for the spot. Best experience so far.

Don’t Expect Them to Read Your Resume - When I am interviewing, I just like to skim through the resume. I try to see if there is anything outstanding, besides that I like to ask questions and get their best experiences out of them through their own words.

That’s it for now, I am sure I will learn more over time .

Sometimes I get tattoos for the small talk conversation.

All Your History Bethesda

Bethesda Game Studios makes the biggest and arguably the best hardcore games out there. Was able to catch a couple of their Game Developer Conference talks and they were some the best / most interesting parts of the conference. So I was glad to find this little series that documents the history of the studio. Very interesting and great watch. Todd Howard is intense!

Dust Force Level 0.4

Dustorce  is incredible game. The platforming is solid, the music is fantastic, and the art is stunning. As soon as I say the trailer on Steam, I had to get this game. Dustforce involves going through a stand platform 2D level game, running, wall climbing, and striking your way to get the end goal. What makes the game so fun is the focus of speed and gliding across the environment. You have to get from point A to point B, cleaning up all the dust painted on the ground without dropping your combo or getting hit by a passive enemy. The amount of retrying a leveling to get the perfect run you need, can get frustrating but the pay off is worth it. Go Get Dustforce, its on Steam $10 and worth it!

With a recent update they added a level editor to the game. In just an hour of monkeying around I was about to make this little level. So please go download it and hopefully I can find some more time to make some awesome Dustforce levels. Download level here http://atlas.dustforce.com/129/matey-beta-v1

Making a Habit that will not Stick.

Trying to make a habit of writing a blog and keeping track of ideas, projects, and etc. There are so many ideas and things I want to do right now,  just making a half ass blog on some of them might do them justice and contribute more than just junk rolling around my head. It should be a good practice of looking back and going, “What was I thinking!”, “Hey I forgot about that.” or the classic “Did I really do that to my hair and listen to Limp Bizcuit?”  But really, I am looking forward to this exercise of a little internet self indulgence.

Just some quick notes of what I have been up to me in life. Didn’t land that big solid 3D artist position at a AAA game studio I was seeking after college. Instead doing some graphic design and 3D modeling for toys, finally came back around to doing game design for a smaller studio called Funguys Studio. It is something I was always interested in but out of reach for my lack of patience or familiarity with programming. Lucky enough, new tools have bridged the gap of this challenge and I can do something  I really love. Currently living in Manila, Philippines I can work with a young and passionate group of people as we find ourselves in this adolescent medium called Video Games.

Thats all for now
